ONCE AGAIN THE AMERICAN MEDICAL SYSTEM IS #1:

Recreational Drugs FAR Less Likely to Kill You than Prescribed Drugs!

Recreational drugs, including cocaine and heroin, are responsible for an estimated 10,000-20,000 American deaths per year [1,2]. While this represents a serious public health problem, it is a “smokescreen” for America’s real drug problem. America’s “war on drugs” is directed at the wrong enemy. It is obvious that interdiction, stiff mandatory sentences, and more vigorous enforcement of drug laws have failed.

The reason is simple. Cause and effect have been reversed. The desire to solve problems by taking drugs is a product of our culture. When a child is taught by loving parents that the appropriate response to pain or discomfort is taking a pill, it is obvious that such a child, when faced with the challenges of adolescence, will seek comfort by taking drugs.

Drugs are Dangerous Whether Pushed or Prescribed

While approximately 10,000 per year die from the effects of illegal drugs, an article in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) reported that an estimated 106,000 hospitalized patients die each year from drugs which, by medical standards, are properly prescribed and properly administered. More than two million suffer serious side effects. [3]

An article in Newsweek [4] put this into perspective. Adverse drug reactions, from “properly” prescribed drugs, are the fourth leading cause of death in the United States. According to this article, only heart disease, cancer, and stroke kill more Americans than drugs prescribed by medical doctors. Reactions to prescription drugs kill more than twice as many Americans as HIV/AIDS or suicide. Fewer die from accidents or diabetes than adverse drug reactions. It is important to point out the limitations of this study. It did not include outpatients, cases of malpractice, or instances where the drugs were not taken as directed.

According to another AMA publication, drug related “problems” kill as many as 198,815 people, put 8.8 million in hospitals, and account for up to 28% of hospital admissions. [5] If these figures are accurate, only cancer and heart disease kill more patients than drugs. Has the situation improved since the publication of this information? Hardly. Null [6] et al have published the most comprehensive and well-documented study I have seen of deaths associated with medical practice. In this report, their research revealed some shocking facts. The findings are summarized in the abstract:

“A definitive review and close reading of medical peer-review journals, and government health statistics shows that American medicine frequently causes more harm than good. The number of people having in-hospital, adverse drug reactions (ADR) to prescribed medicine is 2.2 million. Dr. Richard Besser, of the CDC, in 1995, said the number of unnecessary antibiotics prescribed annually for viral infections was 20 million. Dr. Besser, in 2003, now refers to tens of millions of unnecessary antibiotics. The number of unnecessary medical and surgical procedures performed annually is 7.5 million. The number of people exposed to unnecessary hospitalization annually is 8.9 million. The total number of iatrogenic deaths shown in the following table is 783,936. It is evident that the American medical system is the leading cause of death and injury in the United States. The 2001 heart disease annual death rate is 699,697; the annual cancer death rate, 553,251.”

Drugs: Number One Killer —The authors conclude: “When the number one killer in a society is the healthcare system, then, that system has no excuse except to address its own urgent shortcomings. It’s a failed system in need of immediate attention. What we have outlined in this paper are insupportable aspects of our contemporary medical system that need to be changed- beginning at its very foundations.”

A recent article in Archives of Internal Medicine [7] stated that in the seven year period from 1998 through 2005, reported serious adverse drug events increased 2.6-fold, and fatal adverse drug events increased 2.7-fold. The authors noted that reported serious events increased 4 times faster than the total number of outpatient prescriptions during the period. Another study concluded that the majority (86%) of the adverse drug reactions for which patients were admitted to a medical intensive care unit were preventable. [8]

One proposed solution to the illegal drug problem was encouraging potential users to ignore peer pressure and “just say no.” Interestingly, this strategy is not being recommended for prescription drugs. Bruce Pomeranz, MD , one of the authors of the JAMA paper, said he is not warning people to stay away from drugs. “That would be a terrible message,” he said. Lucian Leape, MD, of the Harvard School of Public Health said, “When you realize how many drugs we use, maybe those numbers aren’t so bad after all.” [4]

Does that mean that the number of deaths due to illegal drugs, suicide, HIV/AIDS, diabetes, accidents, and drunk driving “aren’t so bad” either? Does it mean that we shouldn’t discourage drunk driving or unsafe sex?The folly of such double standards should be obvious to all. It is time to address the real drug problem — the cultural notion that the first solution to seek for relief of life’s problems is a drug. That’s the drug culture we need to address.

Blind Man Suddenly Sees Again Following Chiropractic Adjustment

DUBUQUE - Doctors aren’t quite sure how it happened, but a Dubuque man can see clearly after being blind in one eye for more than a decade. It happened after a trip to the chiropractor. Twelve years ago Doug Harkey’s left eye suddenly stopped working. “I woke up one day and I didn’t have vision in one eye.”
And as quickly as he lost sight, he got it back. Harkey said, “he just did his normal adjustment and, voila!
After a routine visit to Chiropractor Tim Stackis, Harkey says a miracle happened. “My blind eye starting watering after I left there and it watered for 45 minutes straight. It started making my good eye water. I went to wipe my right eye and I could see out my left again.” Doctor Stackis said the bones in the Harkey’s neck were out of alignment. Stackis said, “That interferes with the messages and energy the brain sends down to the rest of the body.” Harkey now has the depth perception he’d been missing, just what he needs as he’s about to walk down the aisle with his fiancée next month. Harkey’s Fiancée, Gina Connolly said, “I’m not use to him not running into things or stepping on our feet.” Doctor Stackis and Harkey were both surprised by what happened. Harkey said, “He has miracle hands, I guess.” Was it a miracle? Harkey’s not sure how to explain it, he’s just glad it happened. Harkey says his eye doctor says with the help of corrective lenses he will be able to see almost perfectly out of both eyes.

Look at what drug companies do and just think, people trust doctors and are afraid of a chiropractor????

“Nearly a third of antidepressant drug studies are never published in the medical literature and nearly all happen to show that the drug being tested did not work, researchers reported on Wednesday. In some of the studies that are published, unfavorable results have been recast to make the medicine appear more effective than it really is, said the research team led by Erick Turner of the Oregon Health & Science University (in our back yard).

Even if not deliberate, this can be bad news for patients, they wrote in their report, published in the New England Journal of Medicine. “Selective publication can lead doctors to make inappropriate prescribing decisions that may not be in the best interest of their patients and, thus, the public health”

No wonder we are the worst country in the world for preventable deaths. Drug companies lie and hide data from you. If Chiropractic killed thousands of people each year, we would be shut down as a profession. Thank God you are here. Thank God for the miracles.

Nothing is quite as sad as potential lost - what might have been

When I was in elementary school, I had a teacher who had survived the Holocaust. She had the numbers tattooed on the inside of her wrist to prove it.

While I was too young to fully appreciate what she had been through, we did hear a story from another teacher about an experience our teacher had while inside the Nazi’s concentration camps.

It seems it was habit for the Germans to kill babies of the Hebrew women. One day, as a German soldier was murdering an infant, our teacher jumped him and actually gauged out the soldiers eyes. Since he couldn’t see, she got away with it.

Not being a particularly attentive 10 year old, I fooled around in this women’s class quite a bit. That was until I heard this story and it occurred to me I could lose an eye.

I later learned that not fooling around wasn’t enough. Once, as my friends and I showed our typical lack of enthusiasm for our 5th grade studies, she exploded. The teacher yelled, “Mockery!” All I could think to do was cover my eyes.

I didn’t know what mockery meant until several years later. Someone who knew her explained to me that she saw all of the opportunities us boys had and all of the potential we possessed and she could not stand to see us neglecting, wasting, and abusing it.

All of us have so much we are capable of. Don’t make a mockery out of your life. Live it to the Max! If you are not, maybe someone should come scratch your eyes out!

Cholesterol Drug Has No Benefit in Trial, Makers Say

A clinical trial of Zetia, a cholesterol-lowering drug prescribed to about 1 million people a week, failed to show that the drug has any medical benefits, Merck and Schering-Plough said on Monday.

The results will add to the growing concern over Zetia and Vytorin, a drug that combines Zetia with another cholesterol medicine in a single pill. About 60 percent of patients who take Zetia do so in the form of Vytorin, which combines Zetia with the cholesterol drug Zocor.

While Zetia lowers cholesterol by 15 percent to 20 percent in most patients, no trial has ever shown that it can reduce heart attacks and strokes — or even that it reduces the growth of the fatty plaques in arteries that can cause heart problems.

This trial was designed to show that Zetia could reduce the growth of those plaques. Instead, the plaques actually grew almost twice as fast in patients taking Zetia along with Zocor than in those taking Zocor alone.

Patients in the trial who took the combination of Zetia and Zocor were receiving it in the form of Vytorin pills. The trial, called Enhance, lasted two years and covered about 720 patients with extremely high cholesterol, mostly in the Netherlands.

Dr. Steven Nissen, the chairman of cardiology at the Cleveland Clinic, said the results were “shocking.” Patients should not be prescribed Zetia unless all other cholesterol drugs have failed, he said.

“This is as bad a result for the drug as anybody could have feared,” Dr. Nissen said. Millions of patients may be taking a drug that has no benefits for them, raising their risk of heart attacks and exposing them to potential side effects, he said.

Still, patients who are taking Vytorin or Zetia should talk to their doctors if they are concerned and not discontinue taking the medicines on their own, Dr. Nissen said.

Dr. Howard Hodis, a cardiologist at the University of Southern California, also said he was concerned by the trial’s results. Growth in fatty plaques — called atherosclerosis — is highly correlated with heart attacks and strokes, Dr. Hodis said.

“Clearly, progression of atherosclerosis is the only way you get events,” Dr. Hodis said. “If you don’t treat progression, then you get events.”

The results of the trial “necessitate further investigation — that just can’t be ignored,” Dr. Hodis said.

Both companies’ stocks fell on Monday, with Merck’s share price down a bit more than 1 percent. Shares of Schering-Plough, whose profits are much more dependent on the drugs, were down nearly 8 percent.

The results will also add to the controversy surrounding a long delay in releasing the results of the trial. Merck and Schering-Plough completed the trial in April 2006 and had initially planned to release the findings no later than March 2007. But the companies then missed several self-imposed deadlines, citing the complexity of the data analysis from the study and saying they did not know when or if the data would be ready for publication.

Last month, after several news articles highlighted the delay, they finally agreed to release the results soon.

For Merck and Schering-Plough, which jointly market Zetia and Vytorin and share profits from the drugs, the trial’s results are a serious setback. Zetia and Vytorin are important contributors to both companies’ profits, especially to Schering, which is smaller and less profitable than Merck.

Analysts estimate that about 70 percent of Schering’s earnings depend on the drugs. The controversy over the trial is also a problem for Merck, which is trying to repair its reputation after withdrawing the painkiller Vioxx from the market in September 2004.

In the United States, Zetia and Vytorin combined account for about 20 percent of the overall cholesterol-lowering market. More than 100 million prescriptions have been filled in the United States for Zetia and Vytorin since the Food and Drug Administration approved them in November 2002 and August 2004 respectively. Both drugs cost about $3 a day.

Because Zetia reduces cholesterol differently from statins like Lipitor and Zocor, doctors often prescribed it as an additional therapy for patients whose cholesterol remains high even after they are already taking statins. But even before Zetia was introduced in 2002, some cardiologists argued that statins had positive cardiovascular effects that go beyond their ability to reduce cholesterol, and that Zetia lacks those effects.

The Enhance trial covered patients with a gene that causes them to produce very high levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, commonly called L.D.L., or bad cholesterol. Patients in the trial had L.D.L. levels of about 320 milligrams per deciliter at the beginning of the trial, about three times the level cardiologists recommend.

Over the two years of the trial, patients who took Zocor alone reduced their L.D.L. by 41 percent on average, while patients who took Vytorin reduced their cholesterol by 58 percent. Yet despite the larger cholesterol reduction, patients taking Vytorin actually had more growth in fatty plaques in their carotid arteries than those on Zocor. The carotid artery runs through the neck and delivers oxygenated blood to the brain.

FRANCE IS FIRST, U.S. IS LAST IN HEALTHCARE

France is tops, and the United States dead last, in providing timely and effective healthcare to its citizens, according to a recent survey of preventable deaths in 19 industrialized countries. While other countries are seeing preventable deaths decline, the US is dead last in prevention-AGAIN!!! Unless you are part of the solution, you are part of that problem.

London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine looked at death rates in subjects younger than 75 that could have been prevented by timely and effective medical care.

“It is startling to see the US falling even farther behind on this crucial indicator of health system performance,” said Commonwealth Fund Senior Vice President Cathy Schoen, who noted that “other countries are reducing these preventable deaths more rapidly, yet spending far less.”

You need to understand that our Modern Medicine system is the worst in the world and yet we spend the most money on Health care (drugs and surgery) than any other country.

It is time to make a commitment to having your best year ever. It is time to start NOW!

I have accountability people in my health and fitness life, my business and financial life, my chiropractic clinical life, and even my relationship life. Without them, utter failure. With them, ultra-success. Here are some resources to help make it happen: Pastors, friends, co-workers, and siblings. Proclaim to them what it is you are going to do, write it down, and ask them to hold you accountable. Then check in regularly. It’s that simple.
