Read below about one of our most recent ML Makeover graduates:
My name is Shawna and I’m 37 years old. Since my husband died in 2002 at the age of 37 (of a disease of genetic origin) I have been living in an emotional coma. I’ve attempted to raise our four kids but barely kept it together. I had lost all sense of direction and caring of what happened to me. I was present, but not engaged. I loved my children but avoided truly connecting with them. It was too painful to be with them and be reminded of all we had lost and of what I failure I felt I was. I didn’t do it on purpose, but I did begin to try to eat myself to death; food, television, internet, anything to keep myself numb and not truly experiencing the grief that was poisoning me and stealing my life. I got REALLY unhealthy. I gained weight and remained so completely inactive I reached a point of being afraid I might actually have a heart attack before 40.
Unexplained chest pain that wouldn’t go away forced me into the ER in early February (decided it was stress while son was in hospital for same disease as his dad had) and worked as a wake up call. I didn’t want to leave my children orphaned. They needed me. That and the direct confrontation of some friends telling me it was time to move past the grief and reclaim my life made me ready to say yes when another friend offered to have me join her in the MAXIMIZED LIVING MAKEOVER.
I know many people made goals that would be easy to measure – like losing 20 lbs or exercising 4 times a week no matter what. And I started out that way too, but I realized, that as a legalistic person I needed to adjust my goals to something that was not only obtainable but sustainable. I needed to change. And if I changed – my life would. I am astonished at the transformation in my life. In myself, I remember now that I’m not just eating, moving and breathing for myself. It’s for my children, and my friends who need me, and to God’s glory and service. By putting into practice some of the basic (what I call) Kingdom principles I learned on these past Sunday afternoons I felt better – set an example for my children they are starting to follow by their own choice, and making an impact on people around me. I feel strong – on the inside – for the first time since my husband first got seriously sick in 1996. Although he’s been gone for four years now – it wasn’t until recently I finally had the strength of heart to remove my wedding ring for the last time and put it away for good and with it, begins the healing process of letting go of the life I thought I was going to have.
I lost eight lbs and more inches than I could have imagined over the last six weeks – and that makes me feel strong and capable. Imagine what I could do if I REALLY put my mind to it.
There’s a new me – by renewing my mind through God’s word and putting into practice God’s Way in my eating, moving and believing God I have changed. The change to my body will come and has in part already. But the change to my mind and my heart which in turn has changed my life and perspectives is the little miracle I’m taking away from these 40 days. I’m free to move forward and reclaim my life know – and my children are grateful to have me back.
WOW! How awesome is that life transformation?
